Why Study in New Zealand?

New Zealand attracts as many as 90,000 international students every year. By 2025, the nation’s government intends to double this intake to 180,000.An important one of which is the affordability – getting a degree in NZ actually works out to be cheaper than many courses in India. Admission

AAdmission to a University/College in New Zealand requires a completion of twelve years of elementary and secondary education. Most universities ask for a minimum of 75% aggregate marks and a minimum of 60% in English. In case the criterion is not met, you may be required to do a foundation course in some University/College in New Zealand.
All students must be fluent in English language if they are to succeed at university in New Zealand. There are many courses available at public and private institutions in New Zealand and elsewhere to assist international students reach the required level of English language competence. All students should take up IELTS or TOEFL since it is required by the Immigration Services. A band of 6.0 / 6.5 for undergraduate & 6.5 / 7.5 for postgraduate courses is desirable.
The academic year is from mid / late February to early November and most of Universities/Colleges have 2 semesters with a holiday of 4 weeks in June. Each University/College operates slightly different dates and some also offer summer school in the main holiday period in November to February. Intakes are in February, July and sometimes in September. New Zealand, the New NZIDRS, provides financial support for international students undertaking doctoral degrees by research in New Zealand Universities. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

How much funds?

A) Cost of Education
These costs will vary depending on the course or institution. This is average costs and should only be used as a guide

B) Cost of Living
Most higher educational institutions in the country have Halls of Residence. Rooms are available on a single or twin-sharing basis. Facilities such as laundry, lounge room, and dining hall are also available. Halls of residences provide a safe and secure environment and are generally available in the range of NZ$200 a week. Home stay accommodations are also available. In these types of accommodations, students get to live with a family in a residential house. Flats/independent accommodations are also available; these include one-bed room apartments to 4-5 bedroom flats. A prefixed amount has to be paid to the landlord before one can move in. This amount known as bond is the advance rent of 2-4 weeks, and is refundable. The total cost depends on each student spending habits. However, a student should be able to live in New Zealand for a total cost of living of between NZ$8,000-NZ$15,000 a year including accommodation, transport and entertainment.
C) Financial Proof for Visa
For a student visa, a proof of funding is required NZ $ 27000 - 74000 $ (approx. INR 15 - 40 LAKHS). Student must submit evidence of sufficient funds for maintenance during the stay in New Zealand.
The students should provide evidence of funds upfront for courses that encompass two academic years or less inclusive of living expenses (NZ$10,000 per annum; NZ$ 15,000 per annum w.e.f 02 April 2012) in New Zealand. If the duration of course is longer than two academic years, students should provide a plan of payment to show that they have access to funds and have the ability to meet the rest of the course cost and living expenses. Following evidence of funds are accepted by High Commission of New Zealand:
  • Education loan sanction letter from a nationalised or multinational bank only.
  • Latest bank statements for the past 6 months. It should not be more than 1 week old at the time of lodgement of the application. Please ensure that statements and not balance certificates are provided.
  • Fixed Deposits. In case of providing fixed deposits as evidence of funds please ensure that a copy/counterfoil of the deposit along with a letter from the bank giving the details of the deposit is provided.
  • Public Provident Fund Accounts/Employers Provident Fund Accounts.
  • Post Office Accounts.
  • National Saving Certificates.
Applicants are required to provide documentary evidence of income and source of income of their parents, even if the cost of study is being sponsored by another person.


Funds Transfer Scheme
New Delhi branch has put in place a system wherein the students may choose to transfer 12 months’ living expenses to a bank account in NZ, in addition to paying the tuition fee for 1year. The amount deposited in the bank is locked for a period of 12 months and then drip fed to the student on a prearranged basis.
The funds transfer option is to facilitate student visa applications from those students who genuinely intend to study in New Zealand but may not have access to funds older than six months. Students who opt for this process will not be required to provide verifiable documentary evidence to demonstrate the source of recent funds. This option does not preclude the applicant from submitting satisfactory evidence of funds and source of income for their financial guarantors.

Health Care
The New Zealand government requires that all international students in New Zealand have an appropriate medical and travel insurance for their entire duration of study in New Zealand.
Students need medical insurance to cover all treatments, including doctors, hospitals, ambulance and specialist students. International students can visit the doctor at the student health centre in their institution to get treatment for a very reasonable fee.

Working in NEW ZEALAND
All International students are allowed to work for 20 hours part-time per week, during college days and full-time during vacations, for the permitted duration of stay in New Zealand. New Zealand is the only country that provides a one-year job search visa, regardless of the course pursued by a student. Once you get a job, you can apply for two years of work permit, following which you can apply for permanent residency.

Visa Process
To get a student visa, you need to have an offer of a place from a New Zealand education provider to undertake a course approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).For studying in New Zealand you need a student visa, which you can get within 15 - 20 working days from the date of filing your visa application. A student visa is granted for the course duration plus additional 2 months, i.e. if your course duration is 12 months, you will be granted 14 months of visa.
The current student visa fee is Indian Rupees INR 9000. NZ High Commission do not accept CASH, credit cards or have EFTPOS. The fee must be paid by bank draft in the name of “Immigration New Zealand”. They do not accept drafts payable to New Zealand High Commission or Embassy.
